Gothenburg has a strong music scene that has produced a wide range of both national and international musicians such as Håkan Hellström, José Gonzáles and HammerFall. Besides, Gothenburg has a lot of things to offer in summer, especially great music events. Therefore, the second sense we will explore in our 4-part series about our favourite ways to experience Gothenburg, is with the best music events in Gothenburg to explore the city through sound!
Way Out West is probably one of Europe’s best festivals of indie and rock music. From the 10th to 12th of August, Gothenburg will fill up by festival goers and some of the best acts. The line-up is formed by various national and international artists such as Lana de Rey, Major Lazer, Pixies, The XX and Angel Olsen. The festival combines gigs on three stages in the central Slottskogen city park with other venues around Gothenburg.
However, indie-rock fans are not the only lucky ones. Gothenburg Culture Festival offers six days of hundred activities related to music, dance, food, street artists, film and literature. Held between the 16-20th of August, it is one of Scandinavia’s largest culture festivals. The city streets and squares are transformed into a big street party where you are invited to immerse yourself.
This 6-day party brings an international selection of artists and performances with multiculturality as the centre of its expression. This 2017 edition includes numerous names such as the Lebanese queen of pop Nawal El Zoghbi, the famous Afghan artist Dawood Sarkhosh or the hardcore punk Los Angeles band The Bronx. You can’t miss the Disco music sessions dedicated to the four most spoken languages among refugees in Sweden: Arabic (Wen 16/8 at 19-22), Dari (Thu 17/8 at 19-22), Somali (Fri 18/8 at 19-23) and Tigrinyan (Sat 19/8 at 19-23). On Sunday the city turns into an Indian culture party with Namaste Göteborg, with dance and music from well-known artists such as Geeta Chandran and Barmer Boys.
Gothenburg also offers a vibrant music program during the end of the summer with lot of gigs, like the life at the Pustervik of Dylan LeBlanc the 3rd of September, who is considered as “the new Neil Young” with only two albums, or the Swedish garage rock band The Hives, who will perform the 15th of September at the Liseberg stage. Stay tuned!
