The best restaurants in Gothenburg — a guide to the city's finest dining
Most first-time visitors to Gothenburg are surprised. They arrive expecting a functional port city and find instead one of Scandinavia's most genuinely exciting places to eat. With its close proximity to the sea, Gothenburg has a deservedly good reputation for excellent fish and shellfish. Six local restaurants hold Michelin stars — unusually many for a city of this size — which has firmly placed Gothenburg on the culinary world map.
The reason is geography. Gothenburg sits at the mouth of the Göta älv river, with direct access to the North Sea and the Swedish west coast — one of Europe's richest stretches of coastline for lobster, oysters, crayfish, crab and wild-caught fish. Restaurants here don't import their seafood. They receive it from boats that docked that morning. That proximity changes everything about how the food tastes.
We're Hotel Riverton, a waterfront design hotel on Skeppsbron in central Gothenburg. We've been welcoming guests here for over thirty years, and these are the restaurants we recommend without hesitation.
Seafood, done classically — where to eat fish in Gothenburg
Fiskekrogen — Gothenburg's great seafood institution
Fiskekrogen has been serving seafood classics since 1972 at Lilla Torget, with a clear ambition to let the ingredients take centre stage and the menu follow the season and the catch. Since 2016, owner Lars Ahlström has been running the business together with his son Theodor, with a focus on the best from the sea — from elegant seafood platters to well-composed main courses. The timeless dining room and experienced service make Fiskekrogen an obvious choice for both everyday luxury and special occasions.
The signature experience is the seafood platter — lobster, dill-poached crayfish, freshly shucked oysters — but it is the cod that many regulars return for specifically. The wine list is extraordinary, with one of the most carefully assembled selections in the city. If you'd prefer a more relaxed evening without a reservation, Fêskens bar offers oysters and champagne at the counter with no booking required.
Location note: Fiskekrogen is a short walk from Hotel Riverton along the waterfront toward Lilla Torget — a natural pairing with an evening stroll along Skeppsbron.
The market hall — Gothenburg's Victorian food destination
Stora Saluhallen at Kungstorget is one of Gothenburg's great sensory experiences. Built in 1889, this beautiful brick building is one of Sweden's oldest market halls and serves as a culinary destination where you can find fresh produce, seafood, meats, cheeses, international delicacies and prepared foods. The Victorian ironwork and glass roof have been listed as a protected building since 1985. Today it houses around forty independent traders, bars and restaurants — the kind of place where Gothenburg's food community actually shops.
Hedlunds Havsbar — west coast seafood with outdoor terrace
Hedlunds' cosy seafood bar is located inside Stora Saluhallen, with inspiration from all four corners of the world alongside classical west coast Swedish recipes. What makes it particularly useful for visitors is something few market restaurants manage: it has its own entrance directly from the square outside, stays open in the evenings when Saluhallen itself has closed, and has outdoor seating in summer. That combination — a seafood bar that works as well for a lazy summer lunch on the terrace as for a bottle of sparkling wine with an oyster platter on a warm evening — is rare in the city centre.
There is also a fish shop next door where you can buy the day's catch to take home, with cooking guidance included.
Bar Bulot — the market's finest table
For dinner or drinks inside the hall itself, Bar Bulot is our first recommendation. Bar Bulot brings a touch of French class to the Swedish seafood scene. Oysters from the west coast, plump and salty, are shucked to order. Göteborgs-Posten's restaurant critics awarded it 23 out of 25 points in their January 2026 review — one of the year's strongest scores for any Gothenburg restaurant. The menu is French-influenced and changes frequently, built around small plates and a natural wine list that rewards exploration. Book ahead if you can, or take a seat at the bar.
Rooftop dining — Gothenburg's most spectacular view
View Skybar & Restaurant — the twelfth floor, harbour panorama
No honest guide to dining in Gothenburg could omit View Skybar & Restaurant. Located on the twelfth floor of Hotel Riverton, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing Göta älv and the harbour entrance, it offers one of the city's most memorable settings — and a kitchen that earns the view.
Head chef Christoffer Andersson and his team build their menus around the Swedish west coast and its seasons. Fresh oysters, bleak roe and Oscietra caviar sit alongside always-fresh fish sourced from local suppliers along the Bohuslän coast. The wine list balances natural wines with classical producers, and the cocktail bar is widely considered among Gothenburg's best.
The atmosphere is elegant without being formal — equally at home for a business dinner or a celebratory evening for two.

Restaurant ONE — the intimate alternative
On the first floor of Hotel Riverton, Restaurant ONE offers a timeless, elegant setting and a kitchen that elevates the classic without over-stylising it. Well suited for business lunches, private dinners and conference group meals. The restaurant can be reserved exclusively for private occasions.
Afternoon Tea with a harbour view
Afternoon Tea at View Skybar has become one of Gothenburg's most distinctive daytime food experiences. Freshly baked scones, delicate pastries and seafood canapés — Västerbotten cheese, salmon, seasonal accompaniments — served with a wide selection of teas from Tea Masters, or a glass of Ruinart Brut if the occasion calls for it. Served on Saturdays and Sundays; booking in advance is strongly recommended as tables fill quickly.
For a truly singular evening — Michelin-starred omakase
Hoze Sushiya — one Michelin star, six seats
Some restaurants are worth travelling to Gothenburg specifically for. Hoze Sushiya in the Majorna district is one of them.
Food enthusiasts and top chefs alike flock to this exclusive sushi and omakase restaurant. Head chef José Cerdá serves a small-scale yet luxurious daily menu, crafted with local ingredients and exceptional culinary expertise. Cerdá, a chef with Spanish origins, spent years travelling to Japan to master the Edomae sushi tradition before bringing it to Gothenburg. The result is a menu that draws on Swedish west coast ingredients interpreted through rigorous Japanese technique. The restaurant has only six seats, and the experience follows the traditional omakase format, meaning the chef takes creative control of your entire meal.
Hoze was awarded its first Michelin star in the Nordic Countries 2025 guide, joining a handful of Gothenburg restaurants that together give the city an unusually high concentration of starred dining for its size. Booking is essential and spaces fill weeks in advance — plan well ahead.
Majorna is a short tram or taxi ride from Hotel Riverton, and well worth the journey for a special evening.
Where to stay — a base for everything
Hotel Riverton sits on Skeppsbron, within easy walking distance of Fiskekrogen, Hedlunds Havsbar, Stora Saluhallen and the majority of Gothenburg's central dining scene. The harbour is directly outside, and that proximity to the sea shows up in the quality of ingredients across every restaurant in the neighbourhood.
If you're planning a stay built around food and experience, View Skybar handles the evening. Serenity Spa — our indoor pool, saunas and relaxation lounge — takes care of the morning after.
