The small size of the city and its buzzing street life away from the hordes of tourists makes Gothenburg the perfect destination for romantic weekend getaways. The city is plenty of cozy cafés, stunning green parks and has probably the most delicious seafood on Earth. Indulge yourself and spend a weekend in Gothenburg, one of the most romantic places in Sweden!
- Take A Walk
Gothenburg has plenty of beautiful sights and one of the best ways to experience them is by foot. Haga is a quaint and romantic neighborhood with lots of boutique shops, restaurants and cozy cafes. This charming quarter is one of the oldest in Gothenburg and the main pedestrian street, Haga Nygata, has well-preserved wooden houses, many of them of the characteristic country-governor style. Don’t miss Skansen Kronan, a fortress built in 1687 with a stunning 360 view of the city. After a pleasant stroll you and your partner can pamper yourself at Hagabadet Spa: established in 1876 they offer day spa and packages, all in beautiful baths mixed with original architecture. There are different hotels located near Haga, like Hotel Riverton, a beautifulfour star hotel located only a few minutes’ walk away. Near the hotel is also Magasingstan, the trendy neighbourhood famous for its shops, restaurants and bars, especially when the evening comes.
The archipelago of Gothenburg is one of the must-dos when coming to the city. There are over20 islands to discover in the archipelago, so you don´t need to travel far from the city to see beautiful landscapes, charming villages and stunning nature. Just jump on tram no.11 towards Saltholmen where the ferries to the south Archipelago depart all year around. At the Hotel Riverton you will enjoy the beautiful view of the Gothenburg harbour from its 12th floor. The Älvsnabben ferry is only a short walk from the hotel and it operates throughout the day and departs from Rosenlund, connecting the two sides of Göta Älv.
- Cultural And Eco-Friendly Living
The Gothenburg Museum of Art is worth visiting. With three starts in Michelin’s Green Guide, it houses impressive art from the 15th century to today: it is home to some of the finest Nordic and international art collections. You will find masterpieces from Albert Edelfelt, Edvard Munch, Van Gogh, Monet and Picasso, among others.
After spending a cultural morning you can enjoy a picnic in one of the beautiful gardens and parks of Gothenburg. Slottsskogen is a 338-acre park on the south side of the city and, since 1874, the place for people of Gothenburg to relax, exercise or recreate. There you will find extensive grassed areas, sports facilities, a small zoo and every August the popular Way Out West Festival. Seminarieträdgården is also a good place for a stroll in the afternoon. It is home to over 100 year old orchards and regularly hosts modern art exhibitions in its garden. There are also many restaurants and cafes within the immediate vicinity of the park.
- Food Experience: Welcome To The Capital Of Seafood And “Fika”!
Seafood is considered very seriously in Gothenburg due to the proximity of the city to the sea. In fact, the Feskekôrka, literally “fish church”, is an historic building from 1874 built as a fishmarket but now hosts several seafood restaurants and shops with fresh fish. The importance of seafood is expressed in festivities celebrating different seasons, like the crayfish party. It is a Swedish food fest commonly held any time from late July to early September to celebrate the end of the summer. As the name implies, it consists of eating lots of crayfish in company of friends and family.
You should not miss the opportunity to have a romantic dinner in one of the four Michelin star restaurants. It is quite unusual for a small city like Gothenburg to have so many stars and that is why the city is placed as a destination on the culinary world map. The restaurant 28+ is especially recommended for its reputation of having one of the finest wine cellars in Sweden.
You can also spend a wonderful evening with your partner in one of the many romantic restaurants in Gothenburg. The Toso is famous for its interpretation of the Asian cuisine. For a traditional and delicious cuisine Miss Sophie is one of the favorites, especially for their rotisserie grilled meat. Another top dining spot for spending a wonderful evening with your partner is theRiverton View Restaurant at Hotel Riverton. On the 12th floor of the hotel you and your partner will enjoy beautiful dishes with Swedish and Asian flavours whilst enjoying the beautiful views of Gothenburg harbour.
As the capital of “fika”, during your romantic weekend in Gothenburg you should experience this Swedish tradition. It consists in sitting down for a coffee and something sweet: the classic would be black coffee and a cinnamon bun. There are many cafés in the city where you can enjoy your “fika”, but Haga is probably the perfect neighborhood for it, with lots of cosy cafés, like the Café Husaren, set in a beautiful building and famous for its gigantic and delicious cinnamon buns.
